One of the best pieces of advice we got while house hunting was: never buy a house near a cattle field. As an animal lover, I wondered why? To look out of a window and see cows, horses or goats sounds absolutely lovely!

But not in real life.

As soon as the temperature rises you will know why: an invasion of flies finds its way indoors. And we all know how annoying flies can be.

I would love to know if there is any research on why flies always sit somewhere on people, no matter how big the place is. If you have any knowledge on such a research paper please send it to me.

Flies come into your house as soon as the sun is out, I assume because it’s colder inside. They join you when you cook, especially meat. And they like to have dinner with you. In short, they know how to annoy you all day long.

If you think, that it couldn’t be that bad, just rent a holiday home near a field of cattle in summer. We did this once unknowingly and every meal turned into a battle where in the end we had to hide inside, windows shut.

The best solution we found so far is the Red Top Fly Trap*. It smells, it’s gross and it works brilliantly. It’s a bag with a stinky solution and a red lid on top (hence the name). The flies get attracted by the smell, fly in and are trapped inside.

Best is to hang the trap at the end of spring before the invasion starts, somewhere outside near your terrace, but not to close because of the smell. They are expensive, but they can last up to 2-3 month and get topped up with water if dried out.

This is ours after 3 month, full of fly soup. Don’t ask me how to get rid of the trap without gagging, we haven’t figured this out yet, but it’s worth it. You can find it on Amazon* if you want to try it out.
